Meet Stephen Henning
Stephen Henning’s career as an artist spans decades, evolving from award-winning graphic design and illustration into a celebrated journey of impressionistic painting. An alumnus of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and the University of Minnesota, Stephen first made his mark as an art director and creative director in the Twin Cities, where his innovative work garnered several awards.
A pivotal visit to a Monet exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Art in 1989 ignited his passion for painting, and by 1993, Stephen had transitioned to creating art full-time. His dedication to the arts extended beyond his own practice, leading to the founding of the Evansville Arts Coalition in 1995, an initiative designed to bring more arts opportunities into his community. He also contributed to arts education through his participation in the Artists in the Schools programs sponsored by COMPAS and the Minnesota State Arts Board.
Stephen’s first public exhibit in 1996 at the Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts set records for attendance and sales, establishing him as an Honorary Director. Building on this success, he launched Inspiration Peak Publishing Company, distributing limited-edition prints to over 350 galleries across 15 Midwestern states. His originals have found homes with collectors in all 50 states and on three continents, including media celebrities and business executives. His work, frequently commissioned by healthcare organizations, is known for its therapeutic and serene qualities, contributing to healing spaces nationwide.
In 2005, Stephen expanded his artistic repertoire to include oil pastels, earning recognition in national juried exhibits of the Oil Pastel Society. By 2007, he had achieved signature member status. He also joined the American Impressionist Society, showcasing his evolving style in exhibitions in California, Colorado, and Illinois.
Stephen’s artistic style, initially rooted in representation, has grown increasingly impressionistic, sometimes blending in a touch of fantasy. Deeply inspired by nature, his work captures the essence of North American wilderness and rural landscapes, inviting viewers into tranquil, enchanting scenes. Today, Stephen continues to explore nature’s beauty through oil pastels and canvas, occasionally sharing his expertise through workshops and exhibitions.
